The P226 was specially manufactured to the technical specifications of the US Army, as a replacement for the Colt M1911A1. The P226 was a front-runner, along with the Beretta 92F (US designation M9), and the final decision in favor of the Beretta was on the based of the overall cost. Nevertheless, the P226 was issued to various arms of the U.S. security forces, military the U.S Navy SEALs and others. The P226 was originally produced in 9 mm Para caliber and later on adjusted to .40 S&W and firstly also to .357 SIG caliber. The locking, the uncocking lever and the firing pin safety were the same as that of the previous models P220 and P225. The total length is 7 ¾ inches and barrel length is 4 ½ inches. In 1997, the P226 pistol was released in a number of sporting versions in 9 mm Para caliber, with an adjustable micrometer sights, alloy frame and stainless steel slide. The standard model the P226 has been available for some years now in caliber .40 S&W (12 rounds) and .357 Sig (12 rounds). This kind of caliber is very popular especially in the U.S. The P226 is available in number of different configurations with stainless steel or aluminum frames, with/without rail.
