It was a locked-breech, short recoil pistol based on the principles conceived by John Browning. The pistol was also adjusted by the armed forces of the United States and Japan. In 1988, the magazine release of the P220 in .45 ACP caliber was moved to the left-hand side of the frame. This model was sold at the time in North America as the P220 All American. This modification was carried out to the other caliber versions in 1992. The Sig Sauer P220 is a double-action weapon and is available in the caliber 9 mm Para, 7.65 mm Para, .38 Super and .45 ACP and as a training weapon also in .22 LR. The total length of the weapon is 8 inches and the barrel length is 4 ½ inches. It featured the Sig-Sauer four point safety system and de-cocking lever, patented automatic firing-pin safety block, safety catch notch and trigger guard. The characteristic uncocking lever on the left-hand side of the frame, behind the trigger guard is the takedown lever. The first version of the 220 has a magazine release in the grip heel. From 1992, this pistol has Sig-Petter locking, where the barrel is fixed into the slide. Sig Sauer P220 was produced in a number of variants, including the carry version and the combat version.
