About Sig Sauer firearms

The Swiss Sig concern (Schweizerische Industrie Gesellschaft) has been manufacturing weapons since the middle of the nineteenth century. Henrich Moser, a Swiss army officer founded the company in 1853. This company originally manufactured train sets in Schaffhausen. In 1860 Sig started producing weapons at the request of the Swiss army. From 1865, Friedrich Vetterli ran this weapons factory as a separate company. A short time later the concern was renamed the Schweizerische Industriegesellschaft, Neuhausen am Rheinfall, or Sig for short. In the period from 1908 until 1911 Sig produced the first semi-automatic gas-operated rifle, the Mondragon carbine, based on the design of the Mexican General Manuel Mondragon. In 1920 Sig manufactured large quantities of Bergmann machine pistols and exported them to various countries including China, Finland and Japan. In 1927 Sig introduced their first machine guns known as the KE-7 and supplied them to the armies of several countries including Chile, China, Colombia, Finland and Peru. In 1938 Sig was hindered by an export ban. Weapons were only allowed to be exported by companies in possession of a government license, a situation that still applies to the whole of Europe. Switzerland remained neutral throughout the Second World War. In those days, Sig produced large quantities of weapons for the Swiss army, such as the MP41 machine pistol, followed by the 44,45,46 and 48. Between 1937 and 1948 his company developed an automatic that was entered into service with the army in 1947 carrying the model name SP47/8. This weapon came on the civilian market as the Sig 210. In 1955 Sig were commissioned by the government to develop and manufacture a fully automatic riffle. This was the Strumgewehr 57, of which 700 000 weapons were supplied to the Swiss army alone. In 1971, Sig took over the sporting weapons factory of Hammerli, with the German weapon concern Sauer&Son from Eckenforde joining the concern in 1974. The latter collaboration has led to a whole series of Sig Sauer pistols. In 1984, Sig designed a new type of army rifle. This has resulted in a complete SG 550/551 weapon generation. The history of the German company Sauer&Son goes back as far as 1971. The company was then based in Suhl, in the federal state of Thuringia. This company originally manufactured army rifles, such as the Sauer Model 1871. In 1870 Sauer decided to switch a large part of the production over the hunting weapons. In about 1900 Sauer introduced their first triple-barreled rifle. In the period from 1913 to 1945 , when the World Wars were being fought, the production capacity of Sauer was at the service of the army. After the Second World War, East Germany was under Russian occupation. This area was to become the DDR (German Democratic Republic) a short time later. This meant the end of this particular weapon company. The new company J.P.Sauer&Son was founded in 1951 in Eckenforde, in the federal state of Schleswig_Holstein. In 1970 Sauer sought to collaborate with a variety of large weapon manufacturers. In 1972 they signed a deal with Colt which led to the Sauer rifles being sold in America under the brand name Colt-Sauer. Sauer also made similar agreement with such companies as the Swedish FFV factories and FN Herstal in Belguim. In 1973 they resumed their collaboration with the Swiss Sig concern. Sig were looking for company to manufacture their new range of pistol models. This led to a merger in 1974. In 1984 their range of hunting weapons was extended with the Franchi over and under shotguns, under the brand name of Sauer Franchi. The Sig Sauer pistol design originates from 1975, when the Swiss army was looking for a replacement for their old Model 49 (SP47/8) service pistol. This resulted in the Sig Sauer P220 pistol, specifically designed for the military market. The US army was also looking to replace the old Colt 1911 A1 .45 ACP pistol, and so they decided to develop yet another new type of pistol. The US government wanted a pistol with a large magazine capacity. Sig Sauer answer was the 15 shot P226, however this effort proved to be in vain as the Beretta 92F 9 mm Para became the new US Army pistol. This must have been a huge disappointment to Sig, as they felt sure they would be awarded this large order. Than Sig supplied a large number of P226 pistols to FBI, replacing the previously issued Smith&Wesson M1076 mm Auto pistol. Sig also took part in the weapon testing for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the British army. The New Zeland armed forces were also rearmed with the P226 pistol in 1997. In order to satisfy the demand for compact pistols for special police forces, Sig once again went back to the drawing board. Above all, Sig felt that they had to make a stand against the completion, which included Smith&Wesson with their 469/669 mini -gun. The other manufacturers ware already supplying or developing their own compact models. The eventual small Sig was model P228, a shortened version of the P226. In December 2000, the Sig weapons factory, along with their subsidiaries Sauer&Son and Hammerli were taken over by a German industrial group led by ThomasOrtmeier and Michael Lyke. This investment group already owned the German weapons factories Blaser and Mauser
